Doxa City Camp

The City Camp Program gives primary school-aged children from rural Victoria a taste of life in inner-city Melbourne. The camp is subsidised by Doxa to enable all eligible schools to participate.  Campers are asked to make a contribution of $75 each which includes accommodation, catering and excursions.

Eligibility

Eligible schools will receive an invitation from Doxa ensuring that as many disadvantaged schools as possible are provided with an opportunity to attend.

Organising a city camp

Camps are held during school terms and run from Monday to Friday.  School staff are responsible for all supervision of the students.  The maximum number of students is 30 with a requirement of four staff.  The minimum number of students is 20.

Smaller schools may opt to join forces with another school to make up the required numbers.

Schools can nominate which term they would prefer and every effort will be made to accommodate their choice.

Doxa provides campers with an exciting itinerary.  A week of city focused and educational activities that have proven to be popular with campers include, The Old Melbourne Gaol , the Melbourne Sports and Aquatic Centre, the Zoo, the Melbourne Museum, the MCG, and the Rialto Towers, to name but a few of the excitng places of interest you will visit.  Doxa organises all the bookings and pays for the outings.

Getting Around

The school and staff are responsible for moving the children from one venue to another.

Metlink Adventures, a public transport safety lesson,  provides campers with a comprehensive orientation to Melbourne’s public transport system.  By participating in the Metlink safety program, campers are provided with three days of free travel in and around Melbourne.  The camp exposes many of the children to Melbourne’s public transport system for the first time and this experience is often regarded as a highlight.

Accommodation and Meals

Camp participants stay at The Doxa City Camp in central Melbourne.  We are located on the second floor of The Meeting Place in Elizabeth Street,  just opposite Melbourne Central Station.  This camp is for the sole use of the school for the duration of the camp.  All meals are provided.  Both accommodation and meals are funded by Doxa. This program is also supported by the Commonwealth Government.  The floor plan is available here for easy allocation of rooms for teachers and students.
